Sports science jobs help to support athletes and sports clubs, improving health, preventing illness and helping recovery from illness through programmes of physical activity.

You might work with sports coaches and sports therapists to assess individuals and teams and help to improve their performance, or alternatively work with doctors to help people improve their health through physical activity.

Sports science jobs can also involve working with hospitals and Primary Care Trusts in areas such as cardiac rehabilitation and health promotion.

Other sports science jobs can involve working on research projects or on the design and production of sports equipment.

Key Skills & Knowledge needed

For any sports science jobs you will need a good interest in sports and an interest in the practical application of scientific ideas and principles.

In addition, analytical and organisational skills and the ability to communicate with others will be essential.

Qualifications and experience needed

Sports science jobs require a degree, usually in sports science. Alternatively, you could complete a degree in a related subject, such as physical education, physiology or psychology, and then complete a postgraduate qualification in sports science.

What other training and development could I do?

Once you are qualified, you can join the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). BASES offer workshops and conferences that will help you stay up to date with new developments in the field.

Salary and benefit expectations

Sports science jobs offer earning between ?20,000 and ?40,000 a year, while those working in high levels of competitive sport can earn ?60,000 or more a year.
